SPAN Coordinating Center

The Coordinating Center (CC) for the Stroke Pre‐Clinical Assessment Network (SPAN) supports late‐stage preclinical studies of putative neuroprotectants combined with reperfusion. The CC is led by Dr. Patrick Lyden who has decades of experience using preclinical animal stroke models and has led clinical trial coordinating centers for large and small multi‐center and single center Phase 1, 2, and 3 clinical trials on behalf of the Federal Government and various industry partners. The CC team includes Jessica Lamb as the Network Manager and Karisma Nagarkatti as the Network Coordinator.

Dr. Lyden and his team provide scientific leadership and regular communication among SPAN sites; distribute protocols and communicate study progress to the network; develop and implement investigator and staff training programs; oversee multiple concurrent protocols; manage subcontracts, protocol‐specific site training, and site monitoring; organize and implement investigator and annual meetings; oversee drug/intervention and placebo control acquisition and distribution. The CC facilitates the development of operational guidelines and protocol compliance; manages data and resource sharing activities; analyzes data and adjusts protocols and interventions performed at each site, based on the adaptive design approach; and monitors compliance with milestones determined by the network.
