Both Dr. Aronowski (PI) and Dr. McCullough (Co-PI) have decades of experience in studying the basic mechanisms of stroke, as well as conducting translational research. These two investigators cover virtually all the techniques used to study cerebral ischemia pertaining to immunology, cell biology, influence of the microbiome, cytoptotection, brain hemorrhage, imaging, neurovascular unit, aging and sex differences. We have well-established functional models of stroke in both rats and mice, including suture models, the tandem MCA/CCA occlusion model, distal MCA occlusion models, bilateral carotid occlusion models, and thromboembolic model in young and aged animals. We have established validated histological methods to measure infarct volume and cell loss and we have over a dozen of sensory-motor and cognitive tests that are validated in our models as predictive measures of neurological outcome as shown in the adjacent table.
